Emma Thompson’s Mother and Veteran Actress Phyllida Law Passes Away at 94
Veteran Scottish actress Phyllida Law, celebrated for her remarkable contributions to film, television, and theatre, has passed away at the age of 94. The acclaimed performer, who was also the mother of Academy Award-winning actress Emma Thompson and actress Sophie Thompson, died peacefully at her home on July 27, 2026, surrounded by her family.
The news was publicly announced on August 18 by her longtime manager, Jacky Leggo.
In a statement shared with the media, Jacky Leggo said that Phyllida Law “died supremely peacefully at home, surrounded by all of her family,” adding that she had been a cherished friend and colleague for more than five decades.
Born in Glasgow, Scotland, Phyllida Law built an extraordinary career that spanned more than half a century. Originally studying theatre design, she eventually pursued acting and became a respected figure on the British stage before transitioning into television and film.
Her extensive acting résumé included appearances in acclaimed productions such as “Peter’s Friends,” “Much Ado About Nothing,” “The Winter Guest,” “Miss Potter,” “Albert Nobbs,” and “The Time Machine.” She also became a familiar face on British television through roles in series including “Midsomer Murders,” “Poirot,” “Foyle’s War,” “Doc Martin,” and “Kingdom.”
Throughout her career, she frequently worked alongside her daughters. She appeared with Emma Thompson in Kenneth Branagh’s films “Peter’s Friends” and “Much Ado About Nothing,” while mother and daughter also portrayed family members in “The Winter Guest,” directed by the late Alan Rickman.
Phyllida Law married actor and writer Eric Thompson in 1957, and the couple remained together until his death in 1982.
