Aimee Mann

American Singer-songwriter

Aimee Elizabeth Mann, born September 8, 1960, in Richmond, Virginia, is an American singer-songwriter acclaimed for her literate, sardonic lyrics exploring themes of emotional underdogs and personal turmoil.

Raised in Bon Air, Virginia, she attended Berklee College of Music in Boston from 1978, studying bass guitar and emerging in the punk scene with the Young Snakes before co-founding the new wave band 'Til Tuesday in 1983 alongside classmate Michael Hausman.

The band's debut album Voices Carry (1985) yielded their top-ten Billboard Hot 100 single "Voices Carry," which won an MTV Video Music Award for Best New Artist, followed by Welcome Home (1986) and Everything's Different Now (1988) before disbanding in 1989 as Mann pursued solo work.

Her solo debut Whatever (1993) on Imago Records garnered critical praise for its wry pop but faced commercial hurdles due to label issues, leading to I'm with Stupid (1995) on Geffen, which similarly impressed reviewers yet underperformed sales-wise.

Her breakthrough arrived with the Magnolia soundtrack (1999) for Paul Thomas Anderson's film, featuring "Save Me" nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song and a Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, prompting her to form SuperEgo Records with Hausman and buy back Bachelor No. 2 (2000) masters from Geffen for independent release.

Subsequent albums like Lost in Space (2002), The Forgotten Arm (2005, a concept album earning Grammy nominations), @#%&*! Smilers (2008), Charmer (2012), Mental Illness (2017), and Queens of the Summer Hotel (2021) solidified her reputation, often collaborating with husband Michael Penn, whom she married in 1997.

Beyond music, she appeared in films like The Big Lebowski (1998) performing "Just Like Anyone," contributed to soundtracks including Juno and Fanboys, and toured extensively while advocating for independent artists through United Musicians.

She received a Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk Album for her 2021 work with Ted Leo as Mann & Leo and maintains a devoted following for her bass-driven indie rock and orchestral arrangements.
