Michelle Obama

Michelle LaVaughn Robinson Obama, born on January 17, 1964, in Chicago, Illinois, is an American attorney, author, and the wife of the 44th President of the United States, Barack Obama. She served as the First Lady of the United States from 2009 to 2017, making history as the first African-American woman to hold this position.

Michelle Obama was born to Fraser Robinson III, a city water plant employee and Democratic precinct captain, and Marian Shields Robinson, a secretary at Spiegel's catalog store.

Her mother was a full-time homemaker until Michelle entered high school. The Robinson and Shields families trace their roots to pre-Civil War African Americans in the American South. On her father's side, she is descended from the Gullah people of South Carolina's Lowcountry region.

Michelle is a graduate of Princeton University and Harvard Law School. In her early legal career, she worked at the law firm Sidley Austin, where she met her future husband, Barack Obama.

She subsequently worked in nonprofits and as the associate dean of Student Services at the University of Chicago. Later, she served as vice president for Community and External Affairs of the University of Chicago Medical Center.

Michelle Obama married Barack Obama in 1992, and they have two daughters, Malia and Sasha. Their relationship began when Barack was a summer associate at the law firm where Michelle worked. They went on their first date that summer and tied the knot three years later.

As First Lady, Michelle Obama served as a role model for women and worked as an advocate for poverty awareness, education, nutrition, physical activity, and healthy eating.

She supported American designers and was considered a fashion icon. She created several initiatives, including "Let’s Move!", a program aimed at ending childhood obesity; the "Reach Higher Initiative" to help students navigate job opportunities and get the necessary education; "Joining Forces", an initiative she co-led with Dr. Jill Biden to support military veterans, service members, and military families; and "Let Girls Learn", a program to support adolescent girls’ education around the world.

After her husband's presidency, Michelle Obama's influence has remained high. In 2020, she topped Gallup's poll of the most admired woman in America for the third year running. She has also authored a bestselling memoir, "Becoming", and hosts "The Michelle Obama Podcast".
