Appointed by President Donald Trump, he presented his credentials as Ambassador to Romania in December 2019. During his tenure, he prioritized fighting corruption, combatting human trafficking, promoting the rule of law, and encouraging reforms in Romanian state-owned enterprises.
He played a crucial role in strengthening U.S.-Romanian defense ties, notably overseeing the signing of a 10-year roadmap for defense cooperation. One of his hallmark achievements was assisting in orchestrating an $8 billion agreement involving the refurbishment of one nuclear reactor and the construction of two additional reactors at the Cernavoda Nuclear Power Plant, financed in part by the U.S. Export-Import Bank in the largest U.S.-Romania project of its kind.
For his significant contributions, the Romanian President awarded him the Grand Cross of the Order of the Star of Romania, the nation's highest civilian honor. After his ambassadorial term, he returned to practice law as Of Counsel with DLA Piper and continued advisory work in regulatory and governmental affairs, especially concerning Eastern Europe.
