Angélica María

Angélica María Hartman Ortiz, born on September 27, 1944, in New Orleans, Louisiana, is a celebrated Mexican singer and actress renowned throughout Latin America as “La Novia de México” or “Mexico's Sweetheart.”

The daughter of American entrepreneur Arnold Hartman and Mexican theater producer Angélica de Jesús Ortiz Sandoval, she moved to Mexico City with her mother at a young age after her parents' divorce. Her film career began in early childhood during the Golden Age of Mexican Cinema, with acclaimed performances in films like "Pecado" and "Mi esposa y la otra," earning her an Ariel Award at the age of six.

As a teenager, she became a prominent figure in both cinema and telenovelas, starring in productions such as "La mala semilla" and "Cartas de amor," and quickly achieved teen idol status across Mexico.

Her music career ignited in 1962 with the release of the hit "Eddy Eddy," written in collaboration with Armando Manzanero, leading to a string of successful albums and tours alongside fellow teen stars like César Costa and Enrique Guzmán.

She was one of the pioneering voices of rock and roll and pop ballads in the Spanish-speaking world, releasing popular tracks such as "El hombre de mi vida" and "Reina y cenicienta." Her partnership with Juan Gabriel in the 1970s produced mariachi ballads including "Tú sigues siendo el mismo," which sold over a million copies in the United States, establishing her as one of the most successful performers in Latin music.

Her career continued with diverse recording contracts and self-produced albums, and she remained musically active through the 2010s.

Throughout her career, Angélica María starred in popular films like "Corazón salvaje" and played leading roles in several celebrated telenovelas, including "Muchacha italiana viene a casarse" and "Ana del aire," further solidifying her international reputation.

She performed in musical theater, ventured into English-language pop, and often collaborated with her daughter, Angélica Vale, on stage and in television, carrying on a multi-generational legacy in entertainment.
