Christopher Meloni

Christopher Peter Meloni was born on April 2, 1961, in Washington, D.C., to parents Charles Meloni, a medical examiner from Italy, and Margaret, an accountant of French-Canadian descent.

Raised in a middle-class family alongside his two siblings, he spent part of his childhood in Bethesda, Maryland, before the family moved to Englewood, New Jersey, where he attended Hackley School and later the University of Colorado Boulder, graduating with a degree in history.

Initially drawn to athletics and comedy during high school, he discovered acting in college through theater involvement, prompting him to relocate to New York City after graduation, where he supported himself as a bouncer while auditioning for roles.​

His early career featured small television parts, including a 1988 guest spot on The Equalizer and a recurring role on the HBO sitcom 1st & Ten: The Championship from 1989 to 1990, followed by unsuccessful leads in short-lived series like The Boys and Misery Loves Company in the mid-1990s.

He gained notice in films such as Twelve Monkeys (1995) alongside Bruce Willis and Bound (1996) as a Mafia enforcer, and appeared in eight episodes of NYPD Blue as criminal Jimmy Liery from 1996 to 1997. His breakthrough arrived with the role of bisexual psychopath Chris Keller on the HBO prison drama Oz from 1998 to 2003, a performance that showcased his intensity and versatility, earning critical acclaim for portraying a manipulative serial killer.​

In 1999, Christopher Meloni landed his signature role as NYPD Detective Elliot Stabler on NBC's Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, partnering with Mariska Hargitay's Olivia Benson to investigate sex crimes, a character he portrayed until 2011 amid a contract dispute, receiving a 2006 Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series.

He balanced the series with comedic film roles in Wet Hot American Summer (2001), Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle (2004), and Runaway Bride (1999) as Julia Roberts's fiancé, while also appearing in dramas like Man of Steel (2013) as Colonel Hardy and Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (2014). After departing SVU, Meloni starred as hitman Nick Sax in the Syfy series Happy! from 2017 to 2019, which he executive produced, and recurred on True Blood as vampire leader Roman Zimojic in 2012.​

Christopher Meloni returned to the Law & Order franchise in 2021, reprising Stabler as the lead of the spin-off Organized Crime, where he also serves as an executive producer, continuing into 2025 alongside guest arcs on SVU.

His voice work includes characters on animated series such as American Dad!, Harley Quinn, and Captain Fall, and he has directed episodes of his shows while producing projects like the short film The Loss of Lillian in 2016.

Personally, Christopher Meloni married production designer Sherman Williams in 1995, and they have two children, daughter Sophia and son Dante, residing primarily in New York.

He has been open about his fitness regimen, maintaining a muscular physique that complements his on-screen roles, and supports causes like animal welfare and veterans' rights.
