Deborah Ann "Debbi" Morgan was born on September 20, 1956, in Dunn, North Carolina, and moved to the Bronx, New York City when she was three months old. She is the daughter of Lora, a teacher, and George Morgan Jr., a butcher, who died of leukemia when she was eight years old.
She has a younger sister named Terry and graduated from Aquinas High School in the Bronx. She began acting in high school productions and further developed her skills by working with the Negro Ensemble Company and the New Federal Theatre.
Her early career included stage performances such as the Broadway play "What the Wine Sellers Buy" in 1974 and tour productions.
