Raised on Long Island with two brothers, she was influenced by her parents, Joan and William Robinson French, both former fashion models, which contributed to her initial pursuit of a career in modeling until her senior year of high school.

She later nurtured her passion for acting, attending the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University, where she honed her skills. she made her film debut with a small role in the 2006 movie Accepted and gained wider recognition for her portrayal of Niki Stevens, a closeted lesbian actress, on the critically acclaimed series The L Word during its fifth and sixth seasons.
