She later attended Northwestern University, where she initially studied English literature and art history but eventually shifted her focus to acting.

Her career began with guest appearances on television shows such as "Seinfeld," "Frasier," and "Mad About You." Her breakthrough came in 1998 when she was cast as Karen Walker in the NBC sitcom "Will & Grace." Her portrayal of the sharp-tongued and hilarious Karen earned her widespread acclaim, including two Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.
