He was born to parents Mayme Edna, a teacher, and Morgan Porterfield Freeman, a barber. He has four children: Alfonso and Saifoulaye from previous relationships, and Deena and Morgana from his marriages.

His acting journey began at the age of nine in a school play. After high school, he joined the Air Force to become a fighter pilot but later realized that acting was his true calling. He attended Los Angeles City College before serving several years in the US Air Force as a mechanic between 1955 and 1959.

His acting career took off in the 1970s with his role in the children's television series The Electric Company. He then appeared in Shakespearean plays Coriolanus and Julius Caesar, earning an Obie Award for the former.

His performance in Clint Eastwood's sports drama Million Dollar Baby (2004) won him the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. His other Oscar-nominated roles include Street Smart (1987), Driving Miss Daisy (1989), The Shawshank Redemption (1994), and Invictus (2009).

He has also portrayed Lucius Fox in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Trilogy (2005–2012) and starred in action films like Wanted (2008), Red (2010), Oblivion (2013), Now You See Me (2013), and Lucy (2014).
