Patti Ann LuPone was born on April 21, 1949, in Northport, New York, and she grew up on Long Island. Her parents, Angela Louise and Orlando Joseph LuPone, were both educators, and her great-great aunt was the renowned 19th-century opera singer Adelina Patti.

From a young age, Patti was drawn to the stage, and she began dancing at the age of four. She attended the Drama Division of the Juilliard School, where she was part of its first graduating class. Her early career included performances with The Acting Company, a classical repertory theatre ensemble.

Patti LuPone made her Broadway debut in 1973 with Anton Chekhov's "Three Sisters" and quickly gained recognition for her powerful performances. She received her first Tony Award nomination for her role in "The Robber Bridegroom" in 1975.

Her breakthrough came in 1979 when she played Eva Perón in Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Evita," earning her a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical. She continued to excel on both Broadway and the West End, winning multiple awards for her performances in "Les Misérables," "Anything Goes," "Sweeney Todd," and "Gypsy."

Patti LuPone has had a successful career in television and film. She starred in the drama series "Life Goes On" from 1989 to 1993 and appeared in films such as "Witness," "Driving Miss Daisy," and "State and Main."

She has also been a part of Ryan Murphy's series "American Horror Story," "Pose," and "Hollywood." Her television work earned her two Emmy Award nominations.

Her personal life includes her marriage to Matthew Johnston in 1988, and they have one child together.

Throughout her career, she has received numerous accolades, including three Tony Awards, two Olivier Awards, two Grammy Awards, and an induction into the American Theater Hall of Fame.
