His early years were influenced by his grandparents, who were prominent figures in the film industry.

His grandmother, Chin Tsi-ang, was a martial arts actress, and his grandfather, Hung Chung-ho, was a film director. At the age of nine, he joined the China Drama Academy, a Peking Opera School in Hong Kong, where he trained in acrobatics, martial arts, and dance. This rigorous training laid the foundation for his future career in the entertainment industry.

His career began at a young age, and he made his feature film debut at the age of 12. He quickly gained recognition for his skills and became a pivotal figure in the Hong Kong New Wave movement of the 1980s. Sammo Hung is credited with reinventing the martial arts genre and popularizing the zombie-like jiangshi genre.

Throughout his career, he collaborated with notable figures such as Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan, contributing to their success as well. His big break came with his role as a sparring partner in Bruce Lee's film "Enter the Dragon" in 1973. He established his reputation as a skilled physical comedian in several kung-fu comedies, starting with "Enter the Fat Dragon" in 1978. Sammo Hung also produced and starred in numerous successful films throughout the 1970s and 1980s for Hong Kong's leading film studio, Golden Harvest.

In addition to his work in Hong Kong cinema, Sammo Hung ventured into international projects. He starred in the American TV series "Martial Law" in 1998 and directed "Once Upon a Time in China and America" in 1997, his first film shot in the United States. His versatility as an actor, director, and choreographer earned him numerous awards and accolades. He won the Best Actor award at the Asia-Pacific Film Festival in 1988 for his role in "Painted Faces" and received multiple Hong Kong Film Awards for Best Actor and Best Action Choreography. In 2024, he was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Hong Kong Film Awards.

His personal life has also been eventful. He was married to Jo Eun-ok from 1973 to 1994, and they have four children together: Timmy, Jimmy, Sammy, and Stephanie. In 1995, he married Joyce Godenzi, a former Miss Hong Kong and actress. Sammo Hung and his wife divide their time between homes in Hong Kong and Los Angeles.
